Double Pitch Conveyor Sprockets

The method of choice for the simple conveyance of product in process where accumulation is to be avoided and positioning is important, double pitch conveyor chains are standard issue in all sorts of manufacturing.  Sprockets for these chains must be precision-made to ensure accurate positioning and conveyance.  For sprockets 30 teeth and less, double pitch sprockets must be used because the pressure angle (the angle in which the chain roller engages the sprocket tooth) varies from standard single pitch sprockets.

As you can see in the diagrams to the right, if you mate double pitch chain with single pitch sprockets, the rollers do not seat correctly; they engage higher on the sprocket tooth face.  This can cause premature wear of the chain and sprocket or the chain may ‘jump’ teeth causing excessive shock and vibration that may damage the entire machine.
